The Hertko Future Leaders (HFL) offers two programs for teens who want to further their leadership skills and/or prepare to become a counselor at Camp Hertko Hollow in future years. Two programs, the Counselor in Training (CIT) program and the Leaders in Training (LIT) program are offered to 16 and 17 year olds who are looking to gain valuable leadership skills that will serve them well at home, in school, and in their own communities.

Counselor In Training (CIT) – for 17 year olds

  • The CIT program is designed to offer qualified young people an opportunity to prepare to become a counselor at Camp Hertko Hollow in future years. Emphasis is placed upon developing leadership skills, sensitivity to children and program skills.
  • Participation in the CIT program is by selection. Those interested in the program must complete an application process, which includes an application and two letters of recommendation.
  • Applicants who are not selected as a CIT candidate for 2024 may still register for Teen Week June 22-28, 2025 as a camper.

To be a CIT:

  • Applicants must be 17 years old as of June 22, 2025.
  • A positive and cooperative attitude and pleasant disposition are critical attributes for the position.
  • Applicants must have previously attended Camp Hertko Hollow as a camper.
  • Applicants must be working towards good control of their diabetes and have a good understanding of diabetes and its care.

  • Two letters of recommendation must be submitted. At least one letter should be from a physician, Diabetes Educator, or school nurse. The other letter should come from a teacher, group leader, or other adult who knows you well enough to evaluate your potential for working with children.
