To provide an educational and recreational camping program for Iowa's youth between the ages of 6-18 who have diabetes that promotes diabetes management skills to gain independence and a positive attitude for controlling diabetes.

Attend Camp This Summer
All youth ages 6-18 who have diabetes are encouraged to attend Camp Hertko Hollow this summer.

Teen Week: June 29 - July 5, 2008 (Grades 6-12)
Kids Week: July 6-12, 2008 (Grades K-5)

Why? To meet new friends who also have diabetes and enjoy the pool, horses, sports, crafts, special night programs, and many other activities at the Y-camp. An added bonus is having our expert medical staff monitor and teach about managing diabetes. View our Camp Brochure and Newsletter for details. Early bird deadline is May 15th. All forms must be received by June 10th. Camp fee is $650 for week long session and $325 for Mini-Camp for 6-7 year olds. Individuals & organizations donate funds to provide camperships so that all youth with diabetes may attend, regardless of the family's financial situation. Birdies for Charities
The Principal Financial Group in Des Moines is hosting their annual Principal Charity Classic Golf Tournament May 28-June 1, 2008 at the Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, and is featuring within their tournament a nationwide program called Birdies for Charities. Camp Hertko Hollow is one of several participating charities and hopefully one of the receiving charities for donations from this pro-tour golf event. The more people we can get involved in gathering donations for Camp Hertko Hollow during this event-the better chance we will have in securing terrific funding for camperships for kids in Iowa with diabetes! Win a Camp Scholarship
All families with a child with diabetes can enter the OneTouch Laugh & Learn Sweepstakes. Parents may enter on behalf of their children age 17 or younger who have diabetes at DiabetesAndKids.com before the May 20th deadline. The 30 Grand Prize winners will receive a full scholarship to attend a week at diabetes camp plus an additional 1,000 First Prize winners will receive a free OneTouch UltraMini Blood Glucose Meter in their choice of color. Winners will be notified by mail after the drawing on May 30th.

The Great Galena Balloon Race fundraising event for Camp Hertko Hollow & JDRF in Galena IL, is just around the corner. It's being held June 20-22, 2008 at Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena. Visit the Great Galena Balloon Race website for more exciting, fun and thrilling event info.

Recipes Needed For New Cookbook
Spice up your life by getting your name published! Submit your family's favorite recipes for the new Camp Hertko Hollow Cookbook, which will be published next Fall 2008. Nutritional information will be calculated and the cookbook will feature a gluten-free section for persons with Celiac Disease.

1. Fill out the recipe form and mail to: Deb Holwegner, Camp Hertko Hollow, 101 Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50309 or email to d.holwegner@CampHertkoHollow.com
2. Have your child use their imagination and make up his or her own version of their favorite recipe to the best of their ability. There will be a special section for children's recipes.
3. We need some artwork, so have your child draw a picture regarding diabetes or memories of diabetes camp.
4. Share your personal story about dealing with diabetes and how Camp Hertko Hollow has enhanced your child's life by attending camp.
