Each year my daughter learns
something new and I feel that camp is very beneficial to her. It
seems like that each year she attends, she takes on a little more
responsibility than the year before.
My daughter loves camp…....she has so many friends there and then
keeps in contact with many of them during the year with snail mail
and e-mail. She says that at camp she's popular. I thought we
would never leave this year because it took her so long to say
goodbye to all of their friends. The bonding in the cabin is
probably her favorite thing. She is more conscious of what's
going on when her number is high or low and how to fix it because
of camp.
Bret told his mom: The food and snacks were great. They let me
eat things that you don't, Mom.
My daughter Allison has attended camp since she was 11 years old
and this summer she was a CIT. She loved it and commented "I
finally found my niche in life. I like working with the kids and
I think they like me." She has never had a negative experience -
only positive. My daughter now does all of her daily managing of
her diabetes thanks to Camp Hertko Hollow! She went to camp not
knowing how to inject her insulin and now she is independent and
can stay overnight with her friends. She feels more like a "normal" kid.
This was Elizabeth's 5th year attending camp. She talks about it
all year round. She loves camp! In fact, she once told me "I
will be sad if they find a cure for diabetes, I would not get to
go to camp." Her comment was "Camp rocks!"
I had to do some persuading to get my son to come to camp since he
was just diagnosed in February. I felt that he went just to
please me. But when I picked him up on Saturday morning he said
"Can't I just stay here for another week?"

Until my son attended camp,
he never believed us when we told him that other kids have
diabetes. When we picked him up, the first thing he said was "All
the other kids have to poke their fingers too!" He had his first
seizure 3 days before leaving for camp, so I wasn't going to send
him, but after talking with his doctor I realized that camp was
exactly where he needed to go and that the staff would take
excellent care of him. They did and he had a wonderful time!
Thank you sooooo much for giving him the opportunity.
My 9 year old daughter
definitely came away with a feeling of community and belonging.
From a camper: I really enjoyed camp this year! My
favorite thing there was getting to shoot the gun. I actually hit
the targets, and had never got to shoot before. This year was
better for a lot of reasons. The cabin was awesome, my counselors
were great and since I was not a first timer, I knew what to
expect and I could do stuff. At home my mom worries too much. I
can't wait to come again next year!
